中国南部からベトナム、ビルマそれにマレーシアに分布しています。暖地に生え、高さは９メートルほどになります。葉は「しゃくなげ」に似て厚く、互生します。早春に、鮮やかな深紅色の花を咲かせます。香港では旧正月を飾る花とされています。種名は、発見者であるイギリスのプラントハンター、シャンピオン（J. G. Champion）に因みます。

マンサク科ロードレイア属の常緑高木で、学名は Rhodoleia championii。英名は Rhodoleia、Hong Kong rose。

The Rhodoleia championii belogns to Hamamelidaceae (the Witch hazel family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southern China, Viet Nam, Burma and Malaysia. This tree grows in warm places and can reach about 9 m in height. The leaves are thick, alternate and resemble to Rhododendron. The bright crimson flowers bloom in early spring. This flowers are adorned in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year. The specific epithet is named after the discoverer of British plant hunter J. G. Champion.
