ヨーロッパが原産のマキシムム種（Leucanthemum maximum）やラクストレ種（Leucanthemum lacustre）などを交雑して作出された園芸品種です。アメリカの育種家であったルーサー・バーバンク（Luther Burbank）によって１９０１年に作出されました。わが国へは昭和時代のはじめに導入されています。茎は直立して、高さは１メートルほどになります。５月から６月ごろ、茎頂に真っ白な頭花を咲かせます。名前は、カリフォルニア州北部にあるシャスタ山（Mt. Shasta）に因みます。写真中３・中４の品種は「スノーキャップ（cv. Snowcap）」、写真中５は「ディーナーズ・エキシビション・ダブル（cv. Diener's Exhibition Double）」。

キク科フランスギク属の多年草で、学名は Leucanthemum x uperbum。英名は Shasta daisy。

The Shasta daisy (Leucanthemum x superbum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a cultivar-group that is derived from Leucanthemum maximum, Leucanthemum lacustre and so on. This interspecies hybrid was raised by American breeder Luther Burbank in 1901. It was introduced into Japan in the early days of Showa Era (about 90 years ago). The stems erect and can reach about 1 m in height. The pure white flower-heads apear on the stem apecies from May to June. "Shasta daisy" was named from Mt. Shasta that located at northern California.
