"Shodo-zakura" (Prunus x syodoi) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to Nikko district of Tochigi Prefecture in Japan. It is thought to be an interspecific hybrid between "Mame-zakura" (Prunus incisa) and "Ooyama-zakura" (Prunus sargentii). The Japanese name is derived from Shodo Shonin, a Buddhist monk who is the founder of the temples of Nikko. This tree grows about 5 m tall. The leaves are obovate to broad obovate with cuneatic tips and double-serrated margins. The 2-3 white flowers bloom in the umbels from middle to late April. The calyx tube is bell-shape, inflated at the lower part and hairless or slightly pubescent.
