The Eve's needle cactus (Austrocylindropuntia subulata) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a treelike cuctus that is native to the Andes region of Peru. It grows in mountainous areas and reaches a height of about 4 m. It is well branched and produces long, thin, somewhat brittle branches. The stem has several spiral rows of rhombic to ovoid ridges. At the tip of each ridge is a areole and one to four grayish-white spines, each about 8 cm long. The rudimentary leaves, which look like awl, are about 12 cm long. The leaves are long and do not shed. The flowers are variable in color, but bloom before summer in orange-pink or other shades. It rarely flowers in cultivation. The fruit is ovoid or club-shaped and covered with fine hair-like spines. Horticulturally, it is called "Shogun" in Japan.
