アメリカ西部のモハーベ砂漠やコロラド砂漠それにメキシコのソナラ砂漠に分布しています。灌木状のサボテンで、高さは１．２〜２．４メートルになります。長さ５〜２０センチ、直径５センチほどの茎節があり、下向きに棘が生えます。この茎節は外れやすく、動物に付着して伝播されます。直径３〜４センチの赤みを帯びた黄色の花を咲かせます。別名で「チョヤサボテン」とも呼ばれ、アメリカ先住民の人たちはこの若い茎節を食用にしたそうです。

サボテン科キリンドロプンティア属の団扇サボテンで、学名は Cylindropuntia bigelovii。英名は Teddy bear cholla。

The Teddy bear cholla (Cylindropuntia bigelovii) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a prickly pear that is distributed in the Mojave Desert, Colorado Desert in the western United States, and Sonara Desert in Mexico. It is a shrub-like cactus with a height of 1.2 to 2.4 m. It has a stalk node with a length of 5 to 20 cm and a diameter of about 5 cm, and spines grow downward. This stalk is easy to come off and attaches to and propagates to animals. It blooms reddish yellow flowers with a diameter of 3 to 4 cm. Native Americans are said to have eaten this young stem segments.
