わが国の各地と、北半球に広く分布しています。湿地などに生え、高さは５０〜８０センチになります。太くて筋のある根茎は横に這い、葉の先端は鋭く尖っています。５月から７月ごろ、葉のあいだから花茎をだし、淡黄緑色の肉穂花序をつけます。葉や根茎には芳香があり、端午の節句には菖蒲湯にされます。でもこの風習は、もともとは古代中国で始まったものとか。

アヤメ科ショウブ属の多年草で、学名は Acorus calamus。英名は Sweet flag。

The Sweet flag (Acorus calamus) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed all over Japan and widely the Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows in bogs and can reach 50-80 cm in height. The rootstocks are thick and having nodes, and crawl sideward under the grounds. The leaves are lance-shaped with acute tips. The flowering stalks are borne among the leaves and come in pale yellowish green spadix from May to July. The leaves and rootstocks are slightly scented and used for bath with iris leaves at Boys' Day. This custom originally became popular in ancient China.
