ヨーロッパ南部の地中海沿岸が原産です。わが国へは中国を経由して、江戸時代の初めに渡来しました。ヨーロッパではあまり食されることはありませんが、アジアで品種改良がすすみ、独特の風味を楽しむ食材となっています。高さは３０〜６０センチになり、６月から７月ごろ、黄色い蛇の目の花を咲かせます。関西地方では「きくな（菊菜）」と呼ばれます。 |

The Chop-suey greens (Chrysanthemum coronarium) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is native to the coastal area of the Mediterranean Sea, south Europe. This herb was introduced via China in the early Edo period. This herb is not eat commonly in Europe, meanwhile it has been breeded and eaten generally in Asia. Chop-suey greens can reach 30-60 cm in height, and the bright yellow heads bloom from June to July. It is also called "Kiku-na" in Kansai district of Japan. |
