アメリカの東南部から中部、中南部に分布しています。河岸の平地や丘陵の尾根などに生え、高さは18〜27メートルになります。樹皮は灰色で平滑ですが、成長すると暗灰色でわずかに割れ目が入ります。葉は楕円形で5〜9深裂し、裂片の先端には剛毛状の鋸歯があります。果実は15〜28ミリほどの卵形の堅果で、鱗片が瓦重ね状に並んだ殻斗に被われます。名前は、テキサス州の地質学者「ベンジャミン・シュマード(Benjamin F. Shumard)」に因みます。

The Shumard oak (Quercus shumardi) belongs to Fagaceae (the Beech family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distribeted to the south-eastern, central and central-southern United States. This tree grows in flats along the river and hillside ridges, and it can reach 18-27 m in height. The barks are gray and smooth, though they turn dark gray and furrowed shallowly at maturity. The leaves are elliptic and 5-9 partite with bristly toothed edges at each lobes. The fruits are ovate, 15-28 mm long nuts. They held in a cup covered imbricately with dense scales. The specific epithet is named after Benjamin F. Shumard, Texas geologist.
