しゅろ (棕櫚)

わが国の九州南部から中国南部が原産です。今では関東地方以西の各地に植栽されています。高さは５〜６メートルになり、雄株と雌株、そして雌雄同株があります。５月に房状の花穂を出し、秋に果実は黒く熟して、鳥によって散布されます。幹は葉鞘である繊維によって覆われ、それはシュロ縄などに利用されてきました。また葉は柄につけたまま裂いて編みなおして、蝿叩きやシュロ箒にされました。別名で「わじゅろ（和棕櫚）」とも呼ばれます。 |

ヤシ科シュロ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Trachycarpus fortunei。英名は Chusan palm、Chinese windmill palm。 |

The Chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native from southern Kyushu to southern China. Nowdays, it is planting in the west of the Kanto region. This palm can reach 5-6 m in height. It is both dioecious and monoecious. The flowers bloom in clusters in May, and the fruits ripen black in fall and they dispersed by birds. The trunks are covered with fibers which are changed from leaf sheaths. The fibers were used as a palm rope, and the leaves with petioles were used as a fly swatter and a palm broom. |
