わが国の南西諸島、石垣島と西表島に分布しています。常緑樹林内の斜面や林下の岩上に生え、高さは３０〜５０センチになります。根生葉は大きな長楕円形です。１月から３月ごろ、直径２．５センチある花を咲かせます。花冠は４〜５個に深裂し、白色で内側に濃い紫色の斑点があります。環境省のレッドリストでは絶滅危惧II類（ＶＵ）に指定されています。

リンドウ科センブリ属の一年草または越年草で、学名は Swertia makinoane。英名はありません。

The "Shima-akebono-so" (Swertia makinoane) belongs to Gentianaceae (the Gentian family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is distributed in the Nansei Islands, Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands in Japan. It grows on slopes in evergreen forests or on rocks under forests, and its height is 30 to 50 cm. The basal leaves are large oblong. It produces flowers 2.5 cm in diameter from January to March. The corolla splits deeply into 4 or 5 lobes, white with dark purple spots on the inside. It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
