The sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native to North America, Central America and South America, from Canada south to Argentina. This herb grows in mountainous plateaus, rocky slopes, and sandy plains, and up to a height of 30-100 cm. The leaves are narrow, bluish-gray, and concentrated at the bottom of the culm. They turns golden brown in fall. The spikes of purplish-tinged flowers appear on arching stems above the foliage in early to mid summer. They fade to tan as the seeds mature.
