The "Shishi-gashira" (Blechnum niponicum) belongs to the family Blechnaceae. It is an evergreen perennial fern that is endemic to Japan and can be found elsewhere across Japan. This fern grows in montane fotests and rodeside slopes, and it can reach 20-40 cm in height. It has thick rootstocks and bears the leaves radially. This fern has two types of fronds, sterile and fertile fronds. The fronds have short petioles and valleculas on rachisesa. The Japanese name is derived from the Lion's mane.
