地中海沿岸が原産です。耐寒性が強いので、冬の花壇の縁取りにもよく使われます。葉や茎には一面に白い綿毛が生えて、ビロードの羽のように見えます。花は播種から２年目以後に見られます。５月から６月ごろ、花茎の先に散房花序をつけて、小さな黄色い花を咲かせます。

キク科キオン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Senecio cineraria。英名は Dusty miller、Cineraria。

The Dusty miller (Senecio cineraria) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranian Sea. This herb are cold tolerant and used as edging of gardens. The stems and leaves are covered with whitish soft hairs, and look like velvety feathers. The flowers come in the second year after sowing. The corymbs are borne on the flowering stalks and bloom small yellow flowerheads from June to July.
