アメリカの南部が原産で、テキサス州やフロリダ州、ノースカロライナ州に分布しています。砂地の空き地などに生え、高さは１〜３メートルになります。茎や葉が白い細かな綿毛に被われて、全体が銀白色にみえます。葉は卵形から披針状卵形で互生します。晩夏から秋にかけて、黄色い頭花を咲かせます。この頭花は太陽につれて廻ることが確認されています。

キク科ヒマワリ属の一年草で、学名は Helianthus argophyllus。英名は Silverleaf sunflower。

The Silverleaf sunflower (Helianthus argophyllus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to the southern Unite State, from Texas to Florida and North Carolina. This herb grows in sandy open areas and can reach 1-3 m in height. The stems and leaves are covered with white fine woolly hairs. The leaves are alternate, ovate to lance-ovate. The yellow flower-heads appear from late summer to fall. The flower-heads are confirmed to turn towards the sun.
