わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国、九州それに東アジアにも広く分布する「ひとつば」の一品種です。山地の岩場や木の下、木の幹にも着生して育ちます。この品種は、生長点異常により葉の先端が別れた形状になります。江戸時代から園芸植物として利用されています。 
ウラボシ科ヒトツバ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Pyrrosia lingua f. cristata。英名は Crested tongue fern。 
Crested tongue fern (Pyrrosia lingua f. cristata) belongs to the Polypodiaceae family. It is an evergreen fern that is a form of "Tongue fern", distributed westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as widely in the eastern Asia. This fern grows on rocky areas in the mountains, under trees, and on tree trunks. This form has a shape in which the tips of the leaves are separated due to abnormal growth points. It has been used as a garden plant since the Edo period.
