The Square stem bamboo (Tetragonocalamus quadrangularis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a bamboo that is native to the central and southern parts of China. It is popular as a garden bamboo and is planted from the Kanto region of Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It is called Square stem bamboo because the culm becomes a quadrangle. It is about 2 to 7 m high and has wart-like protrusions on the lower nodes that become roots when stretched. The leaves are thin and the tip hangs down. Bamboo shoots appear from around October to winter, and they are edible.
