中国の東南部、江蘇・浙江省から江西省、四川省、貴州省に分布しています。わが国へも古い時代に渡来しています。高さは２〜３メートルになり、幹は根元から叢生します。葉は広卵形から卵形で互生します。４月から５月ごろ、葉の展開と同時に、葉腋から散形花序をだし、直径１センチほどの八重咲きの花を咲かせます。結実しません。

バラ科シモツケ属の落葉低木で、学名は Spiraea prunifolia。英名は Bridal-wreath spiraea。

The Bridal-wreath spiraea (Spiraea prunifoli) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from Jiangsu-Zhejiang to Jiangxi, Sichuan and Guizhou Province in southeastern China. It has been brought to Japan in ancient times. This tree has a height of 2-3 m, and the trunks clump from the base. The leaves are broad ovate to ovate, and alternate. The umbels are borne at the axils and the double flowers of 1 cm in diameter bloom from April to May. These flowers will not fruition.
