北アメリカの南東部が原産です。茎は細く３稜から円形で、６０センチほどになります。先端につく葉状苞の基部に白い斑が入り、星形に見えることから「スターグラス」とも呼ばれます。「アメリカさぎすげ（アメリカ鷺菅）」という名前でも流通しているようです。苞の真ん中に小さな花を咲かせますが、目立ちません。

カヤツリグサ科ミカヅキグサ属の多年草で、学名は Rhynchospora colorata。英名は Star-rush、White-top sedge。

The Star-rush (Rhynchospora colorata) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a p@erennial herb that is native to south-eastern North America. The stems are slender and triquetrous to round, and the plant can reach about 60 cm in height. The bases of leafy bracts are white mottled and the bracts seem white stars. The small inconspicuous flowers bloom at the center of bracts.
