The White beautyberry (Callicarpa dichotoma f. albifructa) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a small decidous tree that is a white-flowered variety of "Purple beautyberry", which is native to Japan -from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu- as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, and Vietnam. It grows in wetlands at the foothills of mountains and reaches a height of about 2 m. From around July to August, it produces corymbs slightly above the leaf axils, bearing small white flowers. The fruit ripens from October to November, becoming spherical and glossy white. It is also known by the alternative name "Shiratama-ko-shibu".
