The "Shikotan-suge" (Carex scita var. scabrinervia) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to the Nemuro and Kushiro regions, Rebun Island in Hokkaido, as well as the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. It grows on rocky shores and grasslands, reaching a height of 40 to 80 cm. The leaves are linear, 3 to 6 mm wide, and have papillate projections. From July to August, it extends a scape bearing an inflorescence. The upper 1-2 spikelets are male, 15-30 mm long, while the pleurogerous spikelets are female, also 15-30 mm long. The utricle is elliptic, 45-55 mm long, and dark in color.
