The Starry rosinweed (Silphium asteriscus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the southern part of the United States. It grows in grasslands, pastures, open forests and riverbanks, and grows to a height of around 1.8 m. The stem is upright and often branched. The leaves are highly variable, lanceolate to ovate with pointed tips, entire and opposite or alternate. The leaf surface is rough. From summer to fall, yellow flower heads bloom in the raceme inflorescence at the top of the stem. The flower head is about 8 cm in diameter and has around 20 ray florets and 120 disk florets.
