イギリスやアフリカの北部に分布しています。高さは１０〜２０センチほどですが、茎は地面を這ってマウンド状になります。葉は長楕円形で、灰緑色です。全体に細かい毛があります。６月ごろ、斜上した茎の先に、小さな白い花を咲かせます。開花後には､萼がふくらんで袋状となります。和名では「はまべマンテマ（浜辺マンテマ）」と呼ばれます。

ナデシコ科マンテマ属の多年草で、学名は Silene maritima。英名は Sea campion。

The Sea campion (Silene maritima) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in England and North Africa. This herb grows up to a height of 10-20 cm, the stems crawl on the ground and become a mound. The leaves are elliptic in shape, grayish green. The whole plant is covered with fine hairs. The small white flowers bloom at the tip of the slanted stalk around June. After flowering, the calyxes bulge and become baglike shape. In Japanese name, it is called "Hamabe-mantema".
