サハリンからシベリアに分布しています。高山帯の岩場に生え、高さは１０〜２０センチになります。わが国へは昭和時代の初期に、サハリンから園芸用に導入されました。現在、北海道では一部帰化しているそうです。全体に細かい毛で被われています。葉は披針形で対生します。５月から６月、茎頂に白色の花を咲かせます。膨らみのある萼筒が特徴です。和名では「からふとビランジ（樺太ビランジ）」と呼ばれます。

ナデシコ科マンテマ属の多年草で、学名は Silene sakhalinensis。英名はありません。

The Silene sakhalinensis belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Sakhalin to Siberia. It grows in rocky areas of the alpine zone and can reach 10 to 20 cm in height. It was introduced to Japan from Sakhalin in the early Showa period (about 90 years ago) for horticulture. Currently, it seems that it is partially naturalized in Hokkaido. The whole plant is covered with fine hair. The leaves are lanceolate and opposite. White flowers come on the shoot apex from May to June. It features a bulging calyx. In Japanese name, it is called "Karafuto-biranji".
