しまもくせい (島木犀) [Index] [Back] わが国の本州、福井県以西から四国・九州、それに南西諸島、朝鮮半島南部の巨文島（コムンド）に分布しています。樹皮は灰色を帯び、高さは１５メートルほどになります。葉は狭長楕円形で対生し、やや薄い革質で、先端は尾状に伸びて鋭く尖ります。雌雄異株です。１０月から１１月ごろ、葉腋に小さな白色の花を束生して咲かせます。果実は楕円形の核果で、翌年の５月から６月に藍黒色に熟します。材が固いことから、別名で「なたおれのき（鉈折れの木）」とも呼ばれます。 モクセイ科モクセイ属の常緑高木で、学名は Osmanthus insularis。英名はありません。 The "Shima-mokusei" (Osmanthus insularis) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed westward from Fukui prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu, the Southwest Islands in Japan, as well as Komundo Island of south Korean Peninsula. The barks are gray and can reach about 15 m in height. The leaves are narrow oblong, opposite and thin leathery with long acute tips. This tree is dioecism. Small white flowers come fasciclarly on the axils from October to November.
