The "Shima-mokusei" (Osmanthus insularis) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed westward from Fukui prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu, the Southwest Islands in Japan, as well as Komundo Island of south Korean Peninsula. The barks are gray and can reach about 15 m in height. The leaves are narrow oblong, opposite and thin leathery with long acute tips. This tree is dioecism. Small white flowers come fasciclarly on the axils from October to November. The fruits are elliptic drupes, ripen indigo black in the next year's May to June.
