The "Shima-zakura" (Hedyotis grayi) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is an endemic species of the Ogasawara Islands in Japan. This shrub grows in forest edges, roadsides and rocky cliffs, and it can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are oblong, entire and arranged in opposite. The cymes are borne at the top branches, and blooms pale magenta tinged white flowers from July to October. The fruits are capsule 4-5 mm long, and ripen in December to Janurary.
