アイルランドの南西部およびヨーロッパの南西部からイタリア西部、アフリカの北西部に分布しています。海岸近くの乾燥した場所に生え、高さは２５センチほどになります。根茎は真っ直ぐに伸び、根は多肉質です。葉は線形で根生します。５月から６月ごろ、直立した茎の先端に花序をだします。花は直径２センチほどで、つぼみの時は紫灰色、開くと白色になります。雄しべは６個あり、先端には黄色い葯、花糸は白い綿毛で被われます。果実は３稜のある蒴果です。英名は、アイルランドのケリー州の数か所で見られることに基づきます。

ユリ科シメティス属の多年草で、学名は Simethis mattiazzii (syn. Simethis planifolia)。英名は Kerry lily。

The Kerry lily (Simethis mattiazzii) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is found in southwestern Ireland and southwestern Europe to western Italy and northwestern Africa. It grows in dry areas near the coast and grows to a height of about 25 cm. The rhizome grows straight and the roots are fleshy. In May to June, it produces inflorescences at the tips of its upright stems. The flowers are about 2 cm in diameter, purple-gray in bud and white when open. There are six stamens with yellow anthers at the tip, and the filaments are covered with white wooly hairs. The fruit is a capsule with three ribs. The English name is based on its occurrence in several parts of County Kerry, Ireland.
