ブラジルが原産です。塊茎があり、高さは３０センチほどになります。葉は卵状心形で、縁には細かい鋸歯があります。葉や茎は柔らかな毛で被われます。茎の上部の葉腋から短い花茎をだし、赤色の筒状花を咲かせます。

イワタバコ科オオイワギリソウ属の多年草で、学名は Sinningia cardinalis。英名は Cardinal flower。

The Cardinal flower (Sinningia cardinalis) belongs to Gesneriaceae (the African violet family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Brazil. It has tubers and is about 30 cm high. The leaves are ovate-cordate and have fine serrations on the edges. The leaves and stems are covered with soft hair. A short flower stem emerges from the axils of the upper part of the stem, and red tubular flowers come in bloom.
