ブラジル南部が原産です。熱帯雨林の湿地に生え、高さは20〜30センチになります。地下に、直径と深さが15センチほどになる大きな塊根があり、全体が白い毛で被われています。春から初夏にかけて、茎の先端に花序をつけ、橙赤色の筒状花を咲かせます。「グロキシニア」の仲間で、「断崖の女王」とも呼ばれます。
イワタバコ科オオイワギリソウ属の多年草で、学名は Sinningia leucotricha。英名は Brazilian edelweiss、Queen of cliffs。 
The Brazilian edelweiss (Sinningia leucotricha) belongs to Gesneriaceae (the African violet family). It is a perennial herb that is native to southern Brazil. It grows in wetlands of rainforests and can reach 20-30 cm in height. This plant has a large caudex, up to 15 cm in diameter and in depth. in the basement, and the whole is covered with white hair. From spring to early summer, inflorescences are borne to the tips of the stems and orange-red tubular flowers come in bloom. It is a member of "Gloxinia" and is also called "Queen of cliffs".
