The "Shirane-ninjin" (Tilingia ajanensis) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido, as well as eastern Siberia and Russian Far East. This herb grows in sub-alpine to alpine grasslands, and can reach 10-40 cm in height. The stem is errect and branches at the upper parts. The leaves are bipinnately or tripinnately compound and the leaflets are divided into irregular segments. The compound umbels are borne at the top of stem or terminal branches, and the small white flowers bloom from July to September. The flower is five-petaled and incurved.
