地中海地域が原産です。荒れ地などに生え、高さは６０〜１５０センチになります。葉は頭大羽裂の羽状複葉で、不規則な鋸歯があり、「きく（菊）」に似ています。６月から７月ごろ、淡黄色の４弁花を咲かせます。種子は、直径２ミリほどのほぼ球形で黄色く、辛味があります。種子は他の材料とあわせて、マスタードの原料にされます。

The White mustard (Sinapis alba) belongs to Brassicaceae (the Mustard family). It is an annual herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. It is now wide spread worldwide. This herb grows in barrens and reach 60-150 cm in height. The leaves are lyrate pinnate compound, irregularly dentate and resemble chrysanthemum leaf. The pale-yellow four-petaled flowers appear in June and July. The seeds are almost globular, about 2 mm in diameter, yellow and taste pungent. They are used for the raw material of mustard with other ingredients.
