中国の中部から北部が原産です。わが国へは明治時代の初めに渡来しました。成長が早く、高さは２０〜３０メートルになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、小葉は長楕円形で７〜１０対ほどあります。中軸に翼があるのが特徴です。５月ごろ、下垂する雄花序と雌花序をつけます。雄花序は黄緑色で、雌花序は先端が赤みを帯びます。「くるみ」のように大きな果実をつけません。

クルミ科サワグルミ属の落葉高木で、学名は Pterocarya stenoptera。英名は Chinese wingnut。

The Chinese wingnut (Pterocarya stenoptera) belongs to Juglandaceae (the Walnut family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to central and northern China. This tree was introduced into Japan in the early Meiji Era (about 130 years ago). It grows fast and can reach 20-30 m in height. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 7-10 pairs of oblong leaflets. It is defined by winged rachis. The male and female clusters are borne and drooping in May. The male clusters are yellowish green and the female ones are tinged red at the tips. The fruits are small and winged.
