わが国の南西諸島から台湾、中国の中部に分布しています。高さは１０メートルほどになり、公園や街路樹に利用されます。樹皮は赤褐色ですが、剥離したあとは灰白色です。若い枝には４稜があり、葉は卵状楕円形で先端が尖ります。７月から８月ごろ、枝先の円錐花序に白い花を咲かせます。蒴果は楕円形です。

ミソハギ科サルスベリ属の落葉高木で、学名は Lagerstroemia subcostata。英名は Chinese crape myrtle。

The Chinese crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia subcostata) belongs to Lythraceae (the Loosestrife family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from the Ryukyu islands in Japan to Taiwan and central China. This tree can reach about 10 m in height and plants as a garden or roadside tree. Tha barks are reddish-brown, though they appear grayish-white layers when peeling thinly. The young branches are quadrangular and the leaves are ovate-elliptic with acute tips. The panicles are borne on the terminal branches and bloom white flowers from July to August. The capsules are elliptic.
