アメリカのカリフォルニア州とオレゴン州に分布しています。日当たりが良く湿り気のある草原や雑木林などに生え、高さは３０〜７０センチほどになります。「あやめ」のような小さな葉がつきます。１月から６月ごろまで、茎の先に青紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠の真ん中には黄色い目があります。

アヤメ科ニワゼキショウ属の多年草で、学名は Sisyrinchium bellum。英名は Western blue-eyed grass。

The Western blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium bellum) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to California and Oregon in the United States. This herb grows in sunny wettish grasslands or coppices, and it can reach 30-70 cm in height. It bears iris-like small leaves. The bluish purple flowers bloom atop of stems from January to June. The corolla has yellow eye in the center.
