中国が原産です。わが国へは奈良時代に渡来しました。「ぶんたん（Citrus grandis）」の仲間で、高さは３〜４メートルになります。５月から６月ごろ、芳香のある白色の花を咲かせます。果実は直径２０センチ以上、重さは１キログラムくらいになります。果肉は酸味が強く、生食にはむきません。ジャムやマーマレード、ゆず酒などに利用されます。別名で「おにゆず（鬼柚）」や「ジャガタラゆ（ジャガタラ柚）」と呼ばれます。

The "Shishi-yuzu" (Citrus pseudogulgu) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to China. This tree was introduced into Japan in Nara Era (710-794). It is related to the Pomelo (Citrus grandis) and can reach 3-4 m in height. The scented white flowers come in May through June. The fruit is up to 20 cm across and usually weighing about 1 kg. The fruit has strong acid tastes and unfits to raw diet. It provides the raw material for jam, marmalade or fruit wine.
