南アメリカが原産です。現在では世界中の暖地に帰化しています。わが国へは第二次大戦後に帰化し、関東地方以西から四国、九州に広がりました。道端や荒れ地などに生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。茎は束生して、葉は線状披針形で毛はありません。６月から９月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして３〜７個の花序の枝をだします。小穂は２〜３列にならび、黒紫色の柱頭が目立ちます。また小穂の縁には長い絹毛が生えています。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科スズメノヒエ属の多年草で、学名は Paspalum dilatatum。英名は Dallisgrass。

The Dallisgrass (Paspalum dilatatum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South America. Nowdays, it is naturalized widely in the temperate areas across the world. It was naturalized in Japan after the Second World War and spreaded westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This herb grows in roadsides and barrens, and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The stems are fasciculate and the leaves are linear lanceolate and hairless. The 3-7 cluster-branches are borne at the flowering stalks from June to September. The spikelets are arranged in 2-3 rows and have obvious blackish purple stigmas. Also the edges of spikelets bear the long silky hairs. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
