わが国の小笠原諸島や南西諸島それに東南アジアに分布しています。熱帯・亜熱帯地方の雨林に生え、樹木や岩上に着生します。葉は光沢があり、葉脈が目立ちます。葉裏の胞子嚢群はよく似た「おおたにわたり（大谷渡り）」が３分の２以上つくのに対して、半分くらいしかつきません。新芽は食用にされるそうです。台湾華語では「台灣山蘇花」と呼ばれます。

チャセンシダ科チャセンシダ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Asplenium nidus。英名は Bird's nest fern。

The Bird's nest fern (Asplenium nidus) belongs to Aspleniaceae (the Spleenworts family). It is an evergreen perennial fern that is distributed from the Ogasawara Islands and the Southwest Islands of Japan to Southeast Asaia. This fern grows in rainforests of tropical and semi-tropical areas, and epiphyte on the trees and rocks. Leaves are glossy and have visible vines. This fern forms sponrangia bands which are equivalent to half-width of leaf blade on the reverse side. The burgeons are used for food. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "台灣山蘇花".
