わが国の沖縄諸島から台湾、フィリピンそれにインドに分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１０〜１８メートルになります。樹皮は灰褐色で、円形の皮目あります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、歪んだ長卵形の小葉が２〜４対あります。雌雄別株で、５月から６月ごろ、枝先や葉腋から円錐花序をだし、小さな白い花を咲かせます。果実は翼果で倒披針形です。成長が早く、暖地では街路樹や公園樹として植栽されています。別名で「たいわんしおじ（台湾塩地）」とも呼ばれます。

モクセイ科トネリコ属の常緑高木で、学名は Fraxinus griffithii。英名は Griffith's ash。

The Griffith's ash (Fraxinus griffithii) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from the Okinawa Islands in Japan to Taiwan, the Philippines and India. This tree grows in mountains and up to a height of 10-18 m. The bark is grayish brown and has rounded lenticels. The leaves are impari-pinnate with 2-4 pairs of distorted long-ovate leaflets. It is dioecious. The panicles are borne at the terminal branches or axils and bloom small white flowers from May to June. The fruits are oblanceolate samaras. This tree grows fast and is used as a street tree and a garden tree.
