しろつめくさ (白詰草)

ヨーロッパ原産の帰化植物です。別名の「クローバー」のほうがポピュラーかもしれません。名前は、江戸時代の終わりごろにオランダから献上されたガラス器具の箱の中に、乾燥したクローバーが詰まっていたことから。匍匐枝で広がり、しばしば節からひげ根を出します。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は楕円形から卵形です。春から夏にかけて葉腋から長い柄を出して、白色の蝶形花をたくさん球形につけます。ヨーロッパには、夏至の前夜に摘み取った四葉のクローバーには、魔力を生じるという言い伝えがあります。 |

The Dutch clover (Trifolium repens) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. The Japanese name comes from the fact that a dry clover was packed in a box of glassware presented by the Netherlands at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). Nowadays it is naturalized all over Japan. This herb spreads by stolons and bears fibrils at the nodes. The leaves are trifoliolate with elliptic to egg-shaped leaflets. The globular clusters are borne on the long peducles and bloom many white papilionaceous flowers from spring to summer. According to Europe legend, the four-leaf clovers which pinked on the eve of the summer solstice possess supernatural powers. |
