スノードロップ (待雪草)

ヨーロッパ南部からコーカサス地方に分布しています。落葉樹の林内に生え、高さは１５〜２０センチになります。葉は幅６ミリほどの線形で根生します。冬の終わりの２月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして、小さなベル形の白い花を咲かせます。内花披片の先端に緑色の斑があるのが特徴です。アダムとイブが楽園を追われたとき、天使がイブを慰めるために降る雪に息を吹きかけたところ、その雪の落ちたところから咲いたという伝説があります。和名では「まつゆきそう（待雪草）」と呼ばれます。 |

The Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native from southern Europe to the Caucasus region. This herb grows in deciduous forests and can reach 15-20 cm in height. The leaves are linear, around 6 mm in width and basal. The flowering stalk is borne and the small bell-shaped flowers bloom in late winter, February. It is difined that the inner tepals have green mottles at the tips. Legend has it that when Adam and Eve were driven from paradise, an angel blew on the falling snow to comfort Eve, and it bloomed from where the snow fell. In Japanese, it is called "Matsuyuki-so" (meaning "snow plant waiting"). |
