The Soehrensia strigosa belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a cylindrical cuctus that is found in the north-west of Argentina. It grows mainly in deserts and dry shrubland and is up to 2 m long and 5-6 cm in diameter. It branches from the base to form dense clumps up to 1 m in diameter. There are 15-18 ribs, about 4 central spines and 9-16 marginal spines. The flowers are about 15 cm in diameter, white, funnel-shaped, open at dusk and remain open for most of the following day. The berries are spherical berries, ripening from yellow to orange. The genus is named after Johannes Söhrens (died 1934), a Dutch botanist and director of the Botanical Garden in Santiago de Chile.
