ヨーロッパ南部および西部に分布しています。森林地帯の急斜面に生え、高さは５０〜６０センチになります。成長した株には通常４〜１０個の葉が生え、長さ３０〜１２０センチで、ふつうは下向きに垂れ下がります。葉は株の中心から外側にカーブし、上から見ると渦巻きのように見えます。また葉は柔らかい質感で２回羽状複葉です。それぞれの羽片は長さ４〜１４センチ、小羽片は先端に向かって小さくなります。小羽片の縁は、柔らかい剛毛状です。ソーラスは丸くて、小羽片の中肋の両側に２列に並びます。観賞用植物として庭でよく栽培されています。

オシダ科イノデ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Polystichum setiferum。英名は Soft shield fern、Hedge fern。

The Soft shield fern (Polystichum setiferum) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed in southern and western Europe. It grows on steep slopes in forested areas and is 50-60 cm tall. The mature plant usually has 4 to 10 leaves, 30 to 120 cm long and usually drooping downwards. The leaves curve outward from the center of the plant and look like whorls when viewed from above. The leaves are soft-textured and twice pinnate. Each pinna is 4 to 14 cm long, with the pinnae smaller toward the tip. The edges of the pinnules are softly bristle-like. The sorus is round and arranged in two rows on either side of the pinnule's midrib. It is often grown in gardens as an ornamental plant.
