中央アメリカのコスタリカが原産です。常緑または半常緑の蔓性で、長さは３〜６メートルになります。葉は長さ２０センチほどですが、全縁から羽状裂するものなど変化に富んでいます。夏、茎の先に花序をだし、淡い紫色の花を咲かせます。花はやがて藤色から白色へと変化していきます。

The Giant potato creeper (Solanum wendlandii) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a woody vine that is native to Costa Rica in Central America. It is an evergreen or semi-evergreen vine and can be 3 to 6 m long. The leaves are about 20 cm long, but there are many variations such as those that divide into pinnately to entire. In summer, inflorescences are borne on the tips of the stems and bloom pale purple flowers. The flowers will eventually change from mauve to white.
