"Sonare-matsumushi-so" (Scabiosa japonica var. littoralis) belongs to Dipsacaceae (the Teasel family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Chiba prefecture and Kanagawa prefecture of Honshu in Japan. It is a coastal variety of "Matsumushi-so" (Scabiosa japonica). This herb grows in coastal rocky places and can reach 10-25 cm in height. The leaves are thick, deep pinnately, and arranged in opposite. The flower-heads are pale purple, about 4 cm across, and bloom upward from August to October. The midmost floscules are tubular and divided into isometrical quintuple lobes.
