アメリカの南部、フロリダ州からテキサス州それにメキシコ東北部の湾岸地域に分布しています。低地の林内などに生え、高さは６〜９メートルになります。北部に分布する「さとうかえで（Acer saccharum）」の亜種です。樹皮は淡灰色で、成木になると深い割れ目が入ります。葉は掌状に３〜５裂して対生します。裏面は白い毛で被われます。秋には橙黄色から朱赤色に紅葉します。

カエデ科カエデ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Acer barbatum (syn. Acer saccharum spp. floridanum)。英名は Southern sugar maple、Florida maple。

The Southern sugar maple (Acer barbatum) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is found in the southern United States, from Florida to Texas, and along the Gulf Coast of northeastern Mexico. It grows in lowland forests and other lowland areas and grows 6 to 9 m tall. It is a subspecies of the northern Acer saccharum. The bark is light gray and has deep crevices when mature. The leaves are palmately lobed in pairs with three to five lobes. The underside is covered with white hairs. The leaves turn orange-yellow to vermilion-red in fall.
