南アフリカが原産です。標高の低い砂礫地の斜面などに生え、高さは１５〜６０センチになります。葉は線形から剣状で、１０〜３０センチの長さがあります。春に曲がりくねった花序をだします。花は漏斗形で、白色からクリーム色、外側は紫色を帯びます。

アヤメ科スパラクシス属の多年草で、学名は Sparaxis bulbifera。英名は Harlequin flower、Harlequin weed。

The Harlequin flower (Sparaxis bulbifera) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South Africa. This herb grows in sandy or rocky slopes at low altitudes and can reach 15-60 cm in height. The leaves are linear to sword-shaped and 10-30 cm long. The spikes are borne in spring and flexuous. The flowers are funnel-shaped and white to cream-colored with purple flushed on outsides.
