アメリカの中部から南西部に分布しています。草原や道ばたなどに生え、高さは２０〜１５０センチになります。全体に心地よいとも不快ともいえないような強い芳香があります。茎は直立し、葉は長楕円形から倒卵形で互生します。縁には棘状の鋸歯があります。８月から１０月ごろ、茎頂に黄色い頭花を咲かせます。舌状花は２０〜３０個あり、尖った総苞片が目立ちます。

キク科ハプロパップス属の一年草または二年草で、学名は Haplopappus ciliatus。英名は Spanish gold、Waxed goldenweed。

The Spanish gold (Haplopappus ciliatus) belongs to the Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual or bienial herb that is distributed from the middle to the southwest of the United States. This herb grows on grasslands and roadsides, and up to 20-150 cm high. The whole plant has a strong fragrance that is not pleasant or uncomfortable. The stems stand upright, and the leaves are alternate and oblong to obovate with spiny serrated edges. The yellow flower heads bloom on the top of the stem from August to October. They have 20-30 ray florets and prominent acute bracts.
