The spiny goldenbush (Xanthisma spinulosum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the western United States. This herb grows in sandy or rocky washes, roadsides, plains, prairie, hillsides, and can reach 10-100 cm in height. The leaves are up to 7.5 cm long; lanceolate overall, divided into narrow, linear, spine-topped lobes. They are reddish to green in color. The yellow flower-heads bloom from spring to fall. The ray florets usually number between 14-60, disc florets between 30-150. The flower-heads have 5 or 6 rows of short, narrow, spine-tipped phyllaries.
