スピランテス属は、アメリカ、メキシコからペルーにかけての温帯地方に分布しています。３０種類ほどある地生ランで、わが国の「ねじばな（捩花）」と同じ仲間です。本種はペルーが原産です。紡錘形の塊根があり、茎は直立します。地上部は冬には枯れます。細長い花序を伸ばして、赤色の小さな花を咲かせます。

ラン科ネジバナ属の多年草で、学名は Spiranthes speciosa。英名は Latin American ladiestresses。

The genus Spirantes is distributed in temperate regions from the United States, Mexico to Peru. There are about 30 species of terrestrial orchids, and they are the same friends as "Lady's tresses" in Japan. The Latin American ladiestresses (Spiranthes speciosa) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Peru. It has spindle-shaped bulbs and the stems are upright. The above-ground part withers in winter. It bears the elongated inflorescences and make small red flowers bloom.
