ヨーロッパから西アジア、北アフリカに分布しています。林縁や空き地などに生え、高さは１〜５メートルになります。樹皮は暗灰色から黒っぽく、わずかに溝があります。また鋭い棘があります。葉は楕円形から長楕円形でくすんだ緑色、細かい鋸歯があり、互生します。３月から５月ごろ、葉の展開前に、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。果実は直径１〜１．５センチの核果で、夏の終わりから秋にかけて紫色に熟し、ブルームに被われます。果実には酸味と渋みがあり、ジャムや果実酒に利用されます。

The Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from Europe to West Asia and North Africa. It grows at forest edges and in open spaces and grows 1 to 5 m tall. The bark is dark gray to blackish and slightly furrowed. It also has sharp thorns. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, dull green, finely serrated, and alternate. The fruit is a 1-1.5 cm diameter kernel that ripens to a purple color in late summer and fall and is covered with a bloom. The fruit has a sour and astringent taste and is used to make jam and fruit wine.
