中央アメリカと西インド諸島が原産です。高さは１０〜１５メートルほどになります。葉は卵形から長楕円形で、表面は濃緑色、裏面は褐色で黄金色に輝きます。白色の花は星形をしています。果実は球形から卵形で、果皮は淡黄緑色または暗紫色です。果肉は柔らかで、淡白な甘さがあります。名前は、横に切ると中心部に星形の模様があることから。和名で「すいしょうがき（水晶柿）」とも呼ばれます。

アカテツ科オーガストノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Chrysophyllum cainito。英名は Star apple、Cainito、Golden leaf tree。

The Star apple (Chrysophyllum cainito) belongs to Sapotaceae (the Sapote family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the Caribbean Islands and Central America. This tree can reach 10-15 m in height. The leaves are ovate to oblong, and they have dark green surfaces and shiny brown rear surfaces. The flowers are white star-shaped. The fruits are globose to ovate with pale yellowish green to dark purple peels. The flesh of fruits are soft and bland-tasting sweet.
